Become a Virtual Assistant: What Qualifications do you need?

Would you like to become a virtual assistant but wonder if you have the qualifications?

Starting a virtual assistant business is not very difficult or expensive in contrast to many other businesses, but there are some qualifications you need to have to be successful.

Most virtual assistants have at least five years of high level administrative experience. These are not receptionists or data entry clerks, but high level administrative or executive assistants.

Why do you need high level experience?

A virtual assistant's goal is to form a partnership with a business or entrepreneur and assistant them in running and building that business. This means they need to have experience with a variety of software packages, excellent writing, proofreading and grammar skills, as well as an understanding of business procedures. Many virtual assistants also have expertise in bookkeeping, Internet, graphics or web design, and marketing.

You don't need to have experience in all of these things, but you will need to have a wide variety of skills in order to handle the various tasks your clients will need. The more well rounded you are, the more business you can get.

Most people who decide to become a virtual assistant have years of experience in one or more of the following:

  • Secretarial experience or executive assistants

  • Book keeping experience

  • Strong communication skills, including proofreading, writing, editing

  • Administrative background

  • Legal assistant or paralegal experience

  • Office management experience

  • Professional organizers

  • Concierge experience

  • Fantastic customer service skills are a must

  • Someone with organizational talent and attention to detail
  • As you can see, those who become successful virtual assistants come from a variety of backgrounds and possess various skills. Before deciding if becoming a virtual assistant is right for you, you will need to take some time and decide what services you want to offer.

What will be your niche and target market?

Once you are clear on your business goals, you will know if you possess the necessary skills. If you don't have all of the skills you need, don't worry - there are plenty of good training options. Most businesses and careers involve a variety of necessary skills that require training and there is no reason to be discouraged if you are not proficient in everything. Take some time to prepare and train before you launch your virtual assistant business.

On the other hand, if you have years of experience and feel competent to offer the skills your target market is looking for, you can become a virtual assistant immediately. There are no official certifications, regulations or required training in the virtual assistant industry. Anyone can start their own virtual home business at any time, but you won't last long if you don't have the skills you need. Owning your own business means your reputation is extremely important and you won't build a profitable business by delivering substandard work.

The qualifications you really need to be successful are self-discipline, organizational skills and the drive to succeed. As long has you have enough experience and a good foundation in the essential skills, the rest will take care of itself. The most important quality you need to become a virtual assistant is an entrepreneurial spirit.
