Home Business Account Software - Tax Time Again!

Yes it's tax time again. If you have been keeping careful records of all of your expenses and income, you can easily prepare your taxes yourself or prepare finacial reports for your accountant.

I have been using Quickbooks® for years and really love it. It's easy to use - even for those with little bookkeeping experience and the information easily transports in Turbo Tax® or other tax software you want to use.

It's important to keep careful records throughout the year so tax time isn't more difficult that it needs to be. You want to be sure everything is in order in case you are audited, but you also don't want to miss out on any tax deductions you are entitled to.

Home Based Business Success - 7 Essentials

To be successful with any home business there are certain traits that you must possess or acquire. Despite what many people will tell you, running a business from home is not necessarily easy, especially if you have other commitments such as family or another job. So what are the 7 essentials?

  • A burning desire - you need to have a clear picture in your mind of what you want to achieve, why you want to achieve it and in what time-frame. Your desire might be for yourself or your children, but it must be so strong that you are willing to get our of your comfort zone and make sacrifices to achieve it.
  • Goals and plans - Once you know what you want to achieve, set goals to help you get there. A good guide for goal setting is to use SMART goals, meaning that they should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.
  • Self-discipline and routine - working at home means that you don't have tasks allocated to you or a boss to check on your progress. You are now the boss and it is up to you to keep up with the schedule you have set. Make lists of what you want to achieve each week and each day. Schedule certain tasks for certain times every day. It’s best to establish a habit of doing these things at certain times; human nature being what it is, it is easier to attend to habitual tasks that it is new ones.
  • Knowledge and time - you need to know some business essentials like registering a business, record keeping, any tax requirements and you need to understand how the Internet works, the different legal structures your business can have, how to register your domain name, how to get your work onto your web page, how to automate responses etc. If you don't know all these things already, it will take you time to learn.
  • Persistence - don't give up! Most people fail with creating a home business because they don't persevere when the going gets tough or when they meet opposition. Keep the dream alive and remind your family of the benefits down the road and ask for their assistance and patience until that time comes.
  • Enthusiasm - choosing to base your business about something you are passionate about will help you when the going gets tough; it is always easier to work on something you like. As you will probably already know, when you are enthusiastic about something, your enthusiasm shines through, whether you are speaking or writing and people are more responsive.
  • Treat your home business with respect. Try to have set work hours as much as possible and make yourself unavailable to others during that time, just as you would if you were working for a boss.

Consider Working at Home as a Virtual Assistant.

If you have excellent administrative and secretarial skills, and would like to work at home, you may want to consider starting a Virtual Assistant business.

A Virtual assistant is someone who works from home to offer administrative support to various business owners via the Web, email, fax, and the telephone.

In mamy cases the business professional and VA never actually meet face to face; so long as both parties are connected to the Internet, where each happens to be located is "basically" irrelevant.

As a Virtual Assistant you'd be in a position to supply a variety of virtual services like word processing, typing and correspondence tasks, knowledge entry, transcription, proof-reading and editing services, online filing, email and voicemail, newsletter and brochure writing and handling, social media, website and blogging work, billing, database handling, book-keeping, party and event planning, Internet research... and anything else your clients may wish to throw at you!

You'd have to determine whether to offer an entire vary of services or whether to specialize and concentrate on just one or two.

The Virtual Assistant business is comparatively new, however it's growing quickly as more and more businesses see the benefits of outsourcing administrative tasks to online professionals.

The most obvious advantage is the value savings for businesses. With the onset of recession, you can expect companies to outsource more; in turn increasing the demand for Virtual Assistants.

Value savings go beyond just getting a specific job done cheaply by outsourcing it. Unlike regular staff, Virtual Assistants come with very little "baggage" like lateness, sickness, time-wasting, health insuracne and benefits, unions, pensions and the cost of maintaining an office and equipment. The virtual assistant covers the costs of his/her own virtual office.

So how much might you charge for your services? Something between $15 and $80 per hour, depending on the service and your qualifications. Basic services such as word processing can begin at around $15-$20 per hour, or you could opt to charge by the word, particularly if you're a quick typist. If you supply book-keeping, document editing or writing services, you can easily charge higher rates and still provide your businesses a saving in comparison to an in-house employee.

Watch Out for Home Based Business Scams!

There are many home based business scams today that target good people who are looking for a legitimate way to make money at home.

The good news is the Internet has opened up many possibilities for home based businesses that could not have existing before this modern technology.

On the dark side of the Internet are the scammers who promise you will make a ton of money with little or no experience. This is rarely the case.

Like everything else, making money takes work, skills and perseverance.

If it sounds like a get rich quick scam, it probably is.

Here are some common home based business scams you may have seen:

  • Envelope stuffing
  • Craft assembly
  • Email processing
  • Payment processesing
  • Mystery processing
  • Online Surveys
While some of these home based business opportunities allow you to make money, it is usually very little.

For example, mystery shopping can be legitimage but you will make a little extra money or get a free meal - not get rich.

Mass mailings are usually outsourced and machines stuff envelopes.

Surveys can be a trap because you need to read the fine print for each survey. Usually there are several offers you must participate in that will charge you something and you must cancel by their deadline or you can be billed again.

The best way I have found to make money at home is to start your own home based business. If you have administrative and computer skills, you can quickly and affordably start a Virtual Assistant business.
